In 1916, American physiologists Francis Gano Benedict (1870-1957) and Edna H. Tompkins (1881-?) described a clinical respiration chamber designed to accurately determine the respiratory quotient during periods of one hour or longer.
For this they used the universal respiration device, but the room was barely big enough for a test person to still sit comfortably.
