The first German ambulatory sportsmedicine department was started up in the part of the country that was occupied by the Soviet Union. With the establishment of the 'German university for body culture' in Leipzig, the first department of sports medicine was a fact. The high value of sports medicine in the GDR became clear with the introduction of the term 'specialist in sports medicine'.
