Dutch sports cardiologist Nicole Panhuyzen-Goedkoop presented the results of a retrospective study on the European Society of Cardiology with data of 494 athletes older than 35 years, in which the predictive values of different electrographical criteria were investigated. With the strategy used, in 57% of the athletes a cardiovascular abnormality was found requiring further investigation. According to Panhuyzen-Goedkoop, the results show that an ECG is an effective means of detecting possible causes of sudden death among athletes.
